English Idioms and Expressions

English idioms and expressions are confusing, when you aren’t familiar with them because they don’t say exactly what they mean. Even when you understand all the words of an idiom, you may not understand the meaning. But using an idiom is one of the best ways to make your sounds more like a native speaker. Once you master a few idioms, looking for situations in which to use them is like a game. Idioms are an important part of English as English speakers use them all the time.
We all agreed that we will be speak and write English fluently if we practice it every day, if we learning in all the time, and speak it in all the time. But not in reality, not in Indonesia. We learn just go to school. We learn for about two until four hours and then we came back and you know only Bahasa that we use in conversation. Therefore it’s little bit harder.
There are some idioms and expressions:
A bit-much                          : berlebihan/menjengkelkan
A bridge too fire               : bertindak melampaui batas sehingga tertimpa masalah/ tidak berhasil
Acid test                              : uji coba
Across the board              : berlaku untuk semuanya
Act of God                          : Kuasa Tuhan
A lot on my plate              : sangat sibuk dan memiliki banyak janji
All bark and no bite         : tong kosong nyaring bunyinya
All days in work                 : semua biasa
All in your head                 : hanya mimpi
Ask out                                 : mengajak kencan
Armed to the teeth        : siap tempur!
After all                                                : pada akhirnya
All of sudden                     : tanpa diduga-duga tiba
At all                                      : sama sekali
At this point                       : pada saat sekarang ini
Be about to                        : akan, mau
Be better off                      : dalam keadaan baik
Laugh at                               : menertawakan
Get rid of                             : membuang
Attention, please             : perhatian-perhatian
Time is yours                      : kami persilahkan
We are going to carry on: kita akan kerjakan
Keep talking                       : teruskanlah
Keep it up                           : pertahankan
Drive someone up a wall = seseorang yang menyebalkan
Example: “my nephew is driving me up a wall! He won’t let me stay out late”
Get in someone hair = mengganggu
Example: “Dinni was trying to prepare dinner, but her nephew were getting in her hair!”
When pigs fly= masak sih?
Example: A: “mba Paijem doesn’t pass the exam.”
                    B: she always study hard, doesn’t she? When pigs fly she doesn’t pass the exam.”
Run of the mill= biasa saja
Example: A: “did you watch the band last night?.”
                   B: “I did. It was just a run of the mill performance.”
The novelty wears off= tidak asing lagi
Example: “his performance was funny but later the novelty wore off.”
Brown noser= orang yang suka cari muka
Example: “I don’t like him. He’s such a brown noser”
